How to Choose a Workout Planner: Paper, App, or Printable PDF?

Everyone agrees you should log your workouts. Nobody agrees on how. One coach swears by a battered notebook, another lives inside a training app, and a third prints fresh pages every Sunday night. If you've been going back and forth between the options, here's an honest breakdown so you can pick what actually survives contact with a real gym session.

The real problem: your memory is the worst training log

Before comparing formats, remember why you're doing this at all. Nobody remembers what they lifted last Tuesday — not the weight, not the reps, not how it felt. You walk into the gym and repeat "whatever you did last time," which is never quite the truth. A log fixes that. The format matters far less than the habit — but the wrong format quietly kills the habit.

The three options, honestly compared

A plain notebook. The classic. Cheap, always works, no battery. The catch: a blank page is a blank page. After three weeks most notebooks turn into a mess of half-filled tables, crossed-out exercises, and pages you can't decode later. It works if you're disciplined enough to design your own layout and stick to it.

A training app. Auto-calculations, graphs, rest timers — genuinely useful features. The catches: your phone in the gym means notifications, messages, and the temptation to scroll between sets. Many good apps are free at first and paywalled later, and a phone with 8% battery at 6 PM is a log that never gets written. Sweaty hands and touchscreens are also a real, underrated annoyance.

A printable PDF planner. The middle ground: a designed page with labeled fields (exercise, sets, reps, weight, notes), printed fresh whenever you need it. It lives in your gym bag, needs no battery, no account, and works with chalk on your hands. The catch: you need a printer (or a print shop), and you have to remember to print the next batch before you run out.

What to look for, whichever you pick

  • Labeled fields. If the page doesn't tell you what to write, you'll skip half of it. "Exercise / sets / reps / weight / notes" beats a blank grid every time.
  • One session per page (or per clear block). Crowded pages get abandoned.
  • Room for how it felt. Weight × reps is data; "felt heavy, slept badly" is context. Context is what explains plateaus.
  • A weekly review spot. Five lines at the end of the week — what worked, what's next — turn raw numbers into a plan.
  • Reprintability. Twelve weeks from now you'll want another twelve weeks. A format you can reuse without redesigning wins long-term.

The verdict

For most people training in a real gym, the printable planner is the sweet spot: the focus of paper with the structure of an app, minus the screen and the subscription. If you love data and graphs, use the app too — export the numbers monthly. But the thing that actually gets filled in, session after session, is usually the sheet of paper sitting in your bag.

Built on 20 years of real training — wrestling, combat sambo, MMA.

A ready-made option

If you don't want to design the layout yourself, the 12-Week Workout Planner is a printable PDF with twelve weeks of labeled pages — one page per session, plus weekly review blocks. Print the whole thing once, or print week by week. It's also listed on Etsy.
